Queensland Heritage Register

The Queensland Heritage Register is a list of places of cultural heritage significance to Queensland to be protected for present and future generations. There are three categories of Queensland Heritage Place in the register.

State Heritage Place

A State Heritage Place must satisfy one or more of the following eight criteria specified in the Queensland Heritage Act 1992 (PDF)*:

Archaeological Place

An Archaeological Place must have potential to contain an archaeological artefact that is an important source of information about Queensland’s history. A place entered as an Archaeological Place cannot also be entered as a State Heritage Place.

Protected Area

A Protected Area may be declared around a place of cultural heritage significance.  These declarations provide the strongest possible protection under the Queensland Heritage Act 1992 (PDF)* and are used when places warrant protection which restricts and regulates access to the heritage place.  Permits are issued by DERM to enter Protected Areas with unauthorised access or unauthorised interference (i.e. damage, destruction or excavation) to a Protected Area incurring severe penalties under the Act.
